This is not an exit - Thursday, August 24, 2006 11:26 pm
Like the reference to Anthrax?  Anyway, the site was down because of a mail flood from my other server because of power issues, etc. from yesterday.  Uber-retarded.  Now at least I have some way to know.  I will try to avoid this problem in the future. Thanks for tuning in!

azureus dependency hell - Wednesday, August 23, 2006 3:53 pm
By the way, that last post should have been for Jim's Guitars.   Screw that other B store across the street.  No not Appalachian Bluegrass, the "B" store.  I'm not even gonna say it's name because I hate it so much.  I am never, ever going in that store again if I can avoid it.

WARNING --- the following section has been rated N for excessive nerdiness and linux jargon
Anyways, so I decided to install the latest version of Azureus (2.5.0.0), because for some reason it was not running in my vnc window.  So I decide to try to look for a debian package for it.  It looks like somebody has made a debian package for it! Great, so it's just an "apt-get install" away.  So I apt-get install azureus, and bam, I have the "latest" version.  Unfortunately, the debian package included version 2.4.x.x something, which isn't the latest version.  This also does not run in my VNC window.  Then I look close at the error messages and it appears that it doesn't run because of the VNC service's resolution (too few colors).  So I have to run the actual kdm environment.  This starts, and then azureus runs okay, I think.  It then tells me, "hey! there is a new version of azureus, install? y/n"  So I say, yes, sure, upgrades are usually a good thing.  It gives me some error about being unable to upgrade the SWT manually, with no help on how to fix it.  I restart azureus and all of my transfers start for a few seconds at about 4-5kbps total, and then gradually grind to a halt after about 5-10 minutes.  I'm all, wtf, maybe I need to restart azureus again.  The funny thing is, "restart azureus" under the "file" menu doesn't seem to do anything but freeze the program.  I also notice that my sendmail is sending rejection notices to senders because the load average is too high.  I'm all, wtf??  So I look at a top readout, and the java process is eating up 98% of the process time.  I kill the process and all because the "quit" option in azureus also does nothing.  The underlying problem is this:  The java runtime edition that is in the debian libgcj7 package is the java runtime 1.4.x.x.x something.  You need 1.5.x which is not available at the time of writing this in a debian package.  So Azureus upgrades itself but not the java runtime environment that it needs.  Anyway, I had to apt-get remove azureus and libgcj7 and then install the java runtime manually from www.java.com.  What a pain. But now my downloads stream in faster than ever with much less processor overhead.  Thought I would share that with you. comments

new horizons - Sunday, August 20, 2006 12:30 am
Today I went to ... uhm... Jimmy's Guitar shop?  (I'm not sure if that was the name)
It is across the street in downtown Catonsville, MD from the store Appalachian Bluegrass and that other music store.  I bought a new acoustic to replace the one I have borrowed from my brother for essentially the entire time that I have ever played guitar.  My sister-in-law's cousin is now living with them and her son Igor plays guitar and does not have one.  I feel that I absolutely need to get this guitar back to my brother.  I got a washburn acoustic guitar that has a built in tuner embedded into the wood that is battery powered. It's pretty cool actually.   I just took a break and played it for an hour or so before getting to this sentence.  Weird.

stagnation - Wednesday, August 16, 2006 5:07 pm
The depression has started to wear off into a dull thumping.  I know I don't have the time or energy to put myself into anything fun or interesting.  I want to play music, but I know I can't.  I just don't have the time.  Yea sure, I can come over and dedicate my few hours of time each night after say, 9pm to playing music with someone.  But that's not much time to write stuff, practice, etc.  People want to sleep by 10pm, 11pm at the latest.  Thats say 10 minutes to set up and break down.  Maybe 40 minutes to actually get anything at all done.  Not to mention warming up.  I don't want to just play some hippie jam band shit. That kind of music really pisses me off honestly.  Music without structure is just noise vomit.  It's not to say that you have to have every song orchestrated to the degree of, say, beethoven or meshuggah, but at least it could have a recognizable verse-chorus-verse chord progression or something.  I wish I had more time to do the things I want to do for myself.  Working in IT is so boring.  More of the same old crapola all the time.   I don't even know if I have the inspiration to write music anymore.   Well, I'm gonna try to actually post wedding pictures tonight. That would include my own as well as Julie and Nick's wedding.  Wish me luck comments
